Story of ISRO from Birth to Its Peak

The birth of the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) can be traced back to the early 1960s. At that time, India had just gained independence from British rule and was in the process of rebuilding itself as a newly formed nation.

It faced numerous challenges including poverty, illiteracy, and a lack of modern infrastructure. However, the government had a vision of leveraging space technology for the country’s development.

The birth of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is a story of vision, dedication, and perseverance. ISRO is the national space agency of India, which has achieved many milestones in space exploration and technology development.

In 1962, India’s first Prime Minister, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, recognized the need for space research and established the Indian National Committee for Space Research (INCOSPAR) under the guidance of renowned physicist Dr. Vikram Sarabhai.

The aim of INCOSPAR was to establish a successful space program in India. They recognized the potential of space technology in various fields including telecommunications, weather forecasting, and natural resource management. He envisioned that space technology could be used for the benefit of the nation and humanity.

He also inspired many young scientists and engineers to join the space research activities. Sarabhai faced many challenges in establishing a space program in India. The country was still recovering from the partition and independence, and there were many other pressing priorities.

However, Sarabhai was determined to see his dream through, and he tirelessly worked hard and lobbied the Indian government for support. Sarabhai emphasized the peaceful use of space technology and its potential to uplift the nation.

With his leadership and vision, he gained support from the government and other scientific communities to form the Indian Space Research Organization.

On August 15, 1969, ISRO came into existence. It was established as an independent organization under the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE). The inaugural chairman of ISRO was Dr. Vikram Sarabhai himself. The primary objective of ISRO was to develop good capabilities in space technology.

ISRO started its journey by establishing the Thumba Equatorial Rocket Launching Station (TERLS) in Kerala. The first successful launch from TERLS took place in 1963, making India the seventh nation to possess a sounding rocket. This marked the beginning of India’s journey into space exploration.

One of the significant early achievements of ISRO was the launch of the Aryabhata satellite in 1975. It was India’s first satellite and was named after the ancient mathematician Aryabhata.

This marked a major milestone for ISRO as it demonstrated the country’s capabilities in designing, building, and launching satellites. Over the years, ISRO has made remarkable progress in various space missions.

It launched the Bhaskara-I and Bhaskara-II satellites for remote sensing and earth observation. It also developed the Rohini series of satellites for scientific research and education.

These achievements have contributed immensely to the understanding of space and have enabled India to become self-reliant in space technology.

ISRO’s biggest success came in 2008 with the successful launch of Chandrayaan-1, India’s first lunar mission. Chandrayaan-1 carried sophisticated instruments to study the moon’s surface and detect the presence of water molecules.

This mission put India on the global map of space exploration and showcased its technological prowess. ISRO’s visions have not been limited to lunar missions. It has also achieved significant milestones in satellite launches.

It has successfully deployed a series of communication satellites like INSAT-3A and INSAT-4B, which have revolutionized India’s communication infrastructure. These satellites provide services like television broadcasting, telecommunication, and weather forecasting.

So, the birth of ISRO marked a significant milestone in India’s journey into space technology. It was initiated with the aim of using space research for the country’s development.

Over the years, ISRO has made remarkable progress in various space missions, satellite launches, and scientific research. It has put India on the global map of space exploration and has contributed immensely to the country’s technological and scientific growth. Through its achievements, ISRO has showcased India’s capabilities in space technology and has paved the way for future advancements in the field. If you are interested in a career in space technology, I encourage you to prepare for the ISRO exams. The exams are challenging, but they are also rewarding. With hard work and dedication, you can achieve your dream of working in ISRO.
